MLB Betting Preview: Interleague Play Dominates This Week
A valuable tool used by those who gamble on Major League Baseball is a player or teams past history against an opponent. That is why when interleague play rolls around each year, well informed bettors are at a disadvantage.
This week, interleague play will dominate the headlines and gamblers will have to make as informed a decision as they possible can, without the help of much statistical background. The betting at online sports books such as Bodog will still be popular, but the bets will be more of a gut feel.
Pitchers fare well against some teams and not others. With interleague play, some of the pitchers are facing teams they have never pitched against in the past. usually, that gives the advantage to the pitcher, with hitters not knowing what to expect.
On the other hand, hitters are seeing pitchers for the first time, and there is an adjustment period. The betting totals for interleague play generally are lower than what they would normally be in a match up of teams that are familiar with one another.
The rivalries also make for some betting based on the heart. The Yankees and Mets will play this weekend, and not many Yankees fans will find it in their heart to bet on the Mets, even if it may be a better decision based on the odds. The same can be said for Mets fans betting on the Yankees.
Commissioner Bud Selig has done many different things in his tenure as the leader of baseball, but none have been as groundbreaking for the sport as interleague play. The battles on the field this week will be minor compared to the battles taking place in the heads of millions of gamblers, and that is something Selig may never have envisioned when creating interleague play.
