MLB Interleague Gambling Weekend Ends With Red Sox And Dodgers
This weekend once again proved how Interleague play has become a success in Major League Baseball. The weekend gambling ends tonight when the Los Angeles Dodgers close out their series with the Boston Red Sox on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.
This was one of the more intriguing series' of the weekend because it featured Manny Ramirez going back to Boston. Ramirez helped lead the Red Sox back to the top of baseball during his tenure with the team, but he fell out of favor a couple of years ago when it was perceived that he was dogging it on the field.
When he returned Friday evening, Ramirez received a mixed welcome, with the majority of fans cheering. On Saturday, Ramirez hit a home run for the Dodgers and the cheers had quickly turned to boos. Tonight's game will feature young Boston pitcher Clay Buchholz.
The Red Sox have quietly battled back from their early season struggles to move within one game of the division leading Yankees and Rays. New York took sole possession of first place when they defeated the Mets Sunday, while Tampa fell to Florida.
The Dodgers have also been making their move in the National League West. The surprising Padres have led the division almost all year, but L.A. has put pressure on in the past month. Matt Kemp, a breakout player last season, has yet to get hot, and the Dodgers are expected to make a move for a starting pitcher near the trade deadline.
Interleague play will run for another week, with some of the sports biggest rivalries to be played. Next weekend in Chicago, the White Sox and the Cubs will square off in the Windy City, and the Yankees and Dodgers will play in Los Angeles.
