MLB Teams Gambling That World Baseball Classic Nets No Injuries
The World Baseball Classic has been a tricky proposition for Major Leaque Baseball. They must endorse the event to showcase the game, but there is a tremendous risk factor that comes with letting their star players play.
Johan Santana is one of the top three pitchers in baseball and most experts would agree that if the New York Mets have any hopes of winning a World Series crown, they rest on the left arm of Santana.
That is why the Mets did not want their ace participating in the WBC. In order for them to clear Santana, his native country would have taken out a monstrous insurance policy, which they declined to do. So instead of suiting up for Venezuela, Santana is taking spring training slowly.
Other teams are not so lucky. Some of the biggest names in the game are competing in the WBC. David Otiz, Jake Peavy, Hanley Ramirez, David Wright, and Derek Jeter are just a sample of the top players involved.
That leaves major league teams with one option. Hope and pray that their stars are returned to them in the same condition that they were lent out. One injury in the next couple of weeks and it could mean lights out for a team before the season even starts.
There is no doubt that the entertainment value is there for the WBC to succeed. The only question is whether or not it will succeed in the one area that most American fans care about, keeping their favorite players free from injury.
