NASCAR has several signature events each racing season, and the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has become one of the most popular races on the Sprint Cup series. This week, Jimmy Johnson is the betting favorite to win the race.
Johnson has been the best driver in NASCAR for several years now, and odds makers have made him an 11/4 favorite. That means for every four dollars a gambler bets, they would win eleven dollars, assuming, of course, that Johnson wins the race.
Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon are both extremely popular drivers in Indianapolis, and they, along with Juan Pablo Montoya, are 15/2 choices. Stewart, Gordon, and Johnson have won the past six races at this racetrack.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. made news several weeks ago when he rode his dad's #3 car to victory. After that race, Earnhardt acknowledged that it would be the last time he gets in the #3. Coming into the Brickyard, Earnhardt Jr. has odds of 30/1. While Dale Earnhardt was one of the legendary drivers in NASCAR history, Jr. has had trouble finding his way into the winner's circle.
Mark Martin, who had a surprising run last year, has better odds than Earnhardt Jr. at 28/1. Kurt Busch drives for one of the best owners in the sport, Roger Penske, and that could help the 12/1 choice pull off the upset.
Over 200,000 fans are expected to attend the race this weekend, and the drivers could cash in on the second biggest paying race of the year. The Daytona 500 creates the largest prize pool of the season.
