The Cleveland cavaliers front office knew they had to go out and surround LeBron James with more play makers this past off season. The result of that search was bringing Shaquille O'Neal to Cleveland to clog up the middle for LeBron.

Early in the season, it looked as though that was going to be a failed experiment. The Los Angeles Lakers, fresh off their NBA title last year, raced out to the early lead for home court advantage.

Since the first month, however, it is LeBron and the Cavaliers that have looked like the leagues best team. Cleveland finally passed Los Angeles on Sunday for the best record in the NBA, and if they stay ahead of the Lakers, the betting odds to win this year's championship could soon change.

LeBron still does not have the weapons around him that Kobe Bryant has in L.A., but James looks even more dominant than last year and is getting stronger as the season wears on. Bryant has been dealing with nagging injuries and a team that still has not rounded into championship form.

Other teams that may stake a claim to being title contenders include Denver, Boston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Orlando. Out of all these teams, the Spurs and Nuggets could pose the biggest threat to the Lakers in the West.

The road to the finals for Cleveland may be a little easier. The Celtics are playing as if age is catching up to them, and the Magic have gone through a tough stretch over the past couple of weeks.
