NBA Betting Odds Puzzling Sports Books With LeBron Free Agency Zoo
The NBA season ended last week with the Los Angeles Lakers hoisting the trophy for a second consecutive season. Sports books know that the Lakers will be favored again next year, but they have not revealed much beyond that.
usually, sports books place odds on the next season only days after the previous season has been completed. This year, some odds makers are taking their time releasing their odds because of all the impact free agents that are unsigned.
The biggest of those free agents, of course, is LeBron James. No matter where James lands, odds makers will likely keep L.A. as the betting favorites heading into the season. The number two spot, however, could be directly impacted by James' decision.
This past year, Cleveland was among the top three favorites to win the title for the entire season. If James re-signs with the Cavaliers, they again would be near the top. If James leaves, however, Cleveland would shoot down below the middle point in terms of championship odds.
Likewise, the defending Eastern Conference champions, the Boston Celtics, may be without their coach and Ray Allen. If Allen decides to sign with another team, and Doc Rivers is not back, it likely would signal the end of their mini-Eastern Conference dynasty.
Miami may be the wild card in all of these betting odds. If, by chance, the Heat was able to sign Dwyane Wade and James, they may overtake Los Angeles at the top. If Wade can attract another top tier free agent not named James, the Heat still would have short odds to get out of the East.
