The NBA trade deadline is always a time when odds makers need to reconsider a teams chances of reaching and winning in the playoffs. This year, the sports books will be extra busy with that challenge.

Already there have been two major trades made that could shift the balance of power in the playoff races. Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams are two of the best players in basketball, and both are moving to a new city this week, with Anthony going to New York, and Williams heading to New Jersey.

It has been reported that Williams was furious that he was traded to the Nets. The all-star point guard may not have wanted to stay in Utah long term, but he also did not anticipate the Jazz would pull the trigger on a deal this season. Most analysts believed that the Williams trade would not occur until next season.

As for the gamblers, they must now consider what the addition of Anthony does to the Knicks chances of winning the Eastern Conference. New York is almost guaranteed to make the playoffs, and once there, Anthony and Amare Stoudemire could be a formidable foe for any top team in the East.

Williams' impact will be felt more in the West than in the Eastern Conference. With Williams no longer running the point, and having lost legendary coach Jerry Sloan earlier this year, Utah may see their chances of competing if they make the playoffs shrink considerably.

With one day left before the deadline, several more trades may be completed that would change the betting odds. One rumored deal that has been reported to be complete is Gerald Wallace being traded to Portland. This could have a major impact out West, where the Trailblazers are one of the teams in position to make the playoffs.
