NBA Scout Banned In Midst Of Gambling Scandal
The NBA is just emerging from a gambling scandal involving a former referee in which the referee gave out inside information to gamblers in exchange for cash. The referee, Tim Donaghy, just completed his jail sentence from his case.
Now, the NBA is being rocked once again by a scandal involving gambling. This time, it is a former scout for the Sacramento Kings. The scout, Jack Mai, was fired in January.
Kings owner Joe Maloof ensured that Mai was fired as soon as the owner found out the scout had been gambling on NBA games. He made it clear that the behavior would not be tolerated by the organization.
"I wasn't aware that he was betting," said Maloof, "But the minute we found out he was doing something wrong we had to let him go. People should know that you are not allowed to bet on NBA games. It's against the bylaws, its against the rules."
Being that this is the second incident involving gambling, the NBA is taking the matter seriously. They do not want their image to be one where anyone believes games could be fixed. It is an issue that the league must now begin to crack down on.
Mai, much like Donaghy, will now be ostracized from the NBA. he no longer will be allowed to seek employment by the Kings, or any other team.
