NCAA College Football Betting Starts This Weekend
This weekend kicks off the NCAA college football season with the Boston College vs. Michigan game and sports gambling sites are fully prepared for an influx of online bettors.
Many sportsbooks have toned down there advertising since the BetOnSports.com case, they have also cut down their acceptance of over the phone wagers, both measures done in order to not break the rules of the Wire Act the US implemented in the early 1960's.
On the other hand, sportsbooks are more prepared for greater amounts of online bets than ever before. This year is expected to be the biggest online sports betting season the world has ever seen and most people attribute that to the publicity of the BoS case.
"The beginning of the year is always exciting for us", said Lee Samuels, promotions director for BETbyINTERNET.com. "Folks are really into the American college football thing. So it heats things up on the wagering side of our business."
Once the NFL season kicks off the first week of September record numbers of wagers are expected on American football events. The international world saw the effect this past summber when the World Cup accepted more bets than ever before.
Many directors in the online sports betting industry expect a boom because of the BoS case. They assume that Americans will feel that the US is not prosecuting actual gamblers and thus feel more comfortable about placing wagers online.
Whether sports betting online is legal is a grey area. "Placing wagers over the phone seems like a more clear cut illegal activity," says one betting enthusiast, "while placing wagers over the internet seems like something no one knows whether is legal or not."
