NCAA College Football Gambling Changing As Colorado Joins Pac-10
Usually this time of year is vacation time for odds makers who spend their hours creating college football betting odds. On Thursday, however, these odds makers have been summoned back to work thanks to Pac-10 expansion.
Colorado has officially become the first school in what is expected to be a long list from the Big Twelve to accept an invitation to become part of the Pac-10. The move will most likely cause a domino effect, with other teams also expected to jump ship.
Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor, and Colorado State are just some of the teams that have been mentioned for possible conference realignment. On Wednesday it was reported that Nebraska will be switching from the Big Twelve to the Big Ten.
For decades, odds makers have had pages of history to help them create lines for teams playing against each other in conference. The changing of conferences for some of the sports major teams will present a challenge for sports books. Nebraska, has had minimal battles with some Big Ten teams that they will now play on a yearly basis.
If the Pac-10 follows through on massive expansion, the conference will become as powerful as any in the nation. On any given Saturday, teams ranked in the top five could be squaring off, leaving odds makers with much more contested betting lines.
The Big Twelve has set a deadline of next week for schools to announce their intentions. Once these schools make their commitments, it could open the door for a complete shuffle of the current conferences. Teams will be pulled from lower conferences to fill voids in the power conferences, and the trickle down effect will be broad.
The competitive advantage that sports books have enjoyed over the past decade will be eliminated, at least initially, when realignment occurs. Whether gamblers can take advantage or not, only time will tell.
