The NCAA tournament in college basketball is a time when everyday fans get to show their co-workers and friends that they know more than expected when it comes to the sport. Or, as the first few hours of the tournament has already showed, that picking the right team could come down to a simple coin flip.

In the first wave of games on Thursday afternoon there were several upsets that have bracket fans shaking their heads. Notre Dame was a team many fans had in the Sweet Sixteen this year, but they fell to Old Dominion.

Another team that was predicted by some experts to go far in the tournament was Vanderbilt. They suffered a similar fate as the Fighting Irish, losing to Murray State on a last second buzzer beater.

Villanova is the number two seed in their region, and analysts believe they have a legitimate chance to make it to the Final Four. Their season almost ended in a stunning loss, but the Wildcats were able to hold off their opponent, Robert Morris, in overtime.

One team that did not survive overtime was Florida. The Gators made a furious rally late in the second half, and sent the game to two overtimes before being eliminated from the competition by a game BYU team.

St. Mary's pulled off a little less of a surprise upset against Richmond, but the way St. Mary's won the game was impressive. The final score was 80-71, but it was never really that close in the second half. Baylor, Butler, and Kansas State all avoided first round exits with wins on Thursday.
