New NFL Playoff Overtime Rules Could Affect Betting Lines
The NFL saw the New Orleans Saints win the NFC Championship last year after winning the coin toss to overtime and marching down the field for the winning field goal. That prompted owners to look at the overtime rule.
On Tuesday, owners voted in favor of changing the rules for the extra period in the playoffs. Instead of the current first team to score wins structure, the new rule allows both teams to get the ball at least once.
That rule change could lead to altered betting lines come playoff time next year. Gamblers can expect the lines to be adjusted upwards slightly to allow for the extra possessions should a game go to overtime.
The NFL overtime rule is one that has been scrutinized in the past. With the increase in kicker accuracy, it became more apparent in recent years that the first team to get possession was winning a majority of the overtime games.
Another aspect of the game that has changed and has given a big advantage to teams receiving the ball in overtime was moving the kick-offs back. That has allowed returners to give their teams great starting field position, only needing a first down or two for a chance to win the games with a field goal.
It was not a unanimous vote by owners, but the required number of teams voted for the new plan to change the rule. The reaction from players around the league has been mixed on the new rule, with some players wanting even more changes to the rule.
