New York Mets Gambling On Sheffield To Balance Lineup
The New York Mets were already considered by many to be the favorites in the National League this year. Now they have made a move that many experts are trying to figure out if it makes the team any better.
The Mets signed Sheffield in the hopes that it would balance their lineup. They have a middle to bottom of the order that could have three of their last four position players hitting from the left side.
"Gary gives us another element in the lineup and he gives us a different intensity, just because of the competitive guy that he is," said Mets Manager, Jerry Manuel. The question for the team will be how to get Sheffield at bats.
Currently, the Mets have penciled Daniel Murphy into left field and the number two spot in their lineup. In right field, they have Ryan Church as their starter. They both are left handed hitting outfielders.
There is speculation that Sheffield could fill in for one, or both, of the outfielders if they should show signs of having trouble hitting left handed pitching. Where to get him at bats may end up being the easy job for Manuel.
for his entire career, Sheffield has been a starting player and a middle of the line up presence. Now, he will have to adjust to being a role player for the Mets, assuming neither of the other corner outfielders gets hurt.
