New York Teams Gambling With Johan Santana Have Both Lost
The New York Yankees are accustomed to just picking whichever player they desire on other teams, then throwing money at him to get him to wear the pinstripes. It has been like that for as long as George Steinbrenner has owned the team.
The New York Mets are used to playing second fiddle to the Yankees in New York. They have not spent money over the years on big free agents, and most years feel comfortable playing backup to the Yankees.
Last winter, however, the two teams went head to head. They both were coveting the services of Johan Santana, who many believe is the best pitcher in baseball.
The Yankees were not willing to part with prized young talent, nor were the Boston Red Sox. That left the Mets with the best package for the Minnesota Twins. The Mets won the race for Santana.
Now, a quarter of the way through the baseball season, and both teams appear to be losers in the Santana sweepstakes. The Yankees were in last place in the American League East entering the day, and the Mets have just been swept four straight by the Atlanta Braves.
The Yanks could have used Santana's arm. Their young talent has not panned out, and it has left their rotation thin. The Mets, on the other hand, have an anemic offense, and could have used some of the money they spent on Santana to get themselves some offense.
The season is only one fourth over, but right now both the Mets and Yankees look like losers in the gambling game that was Johan Santana.
