The Dallas Cowboys won their first playoff game in over a decade last season and that has made them the betting favorites to win the NFC East this year. The New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Redskins will be looking to steal the Cowboys' thunder.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is expecting big things for his team in the upcoming NFL season. Dallas is the site of the Super Bowl this year, and Jones believes that the Cowboys, as currently constructed, are good enough to be playing in that game in February.
Odds makers also are buying into the Cowboys hype. Dallas is the betting favorite to win the NFC East, with odds of +110. Quarterback Tony Romo will lead a high powered offense, while their defense is again expected to be one of the top units in the league.
The Giants are a team that sports books are keeping their eye on. New York is just a few years removed from being Super Bowl champions, although they unexpectedly struggled last season. This year, the Giants are again healthy and have odds of +275 of winning the division.
The third choice of odds makers is Philadelphia. After reaching the NFC Championship two years ago, the Eagles also stumbled last season. They parted ways with quarterback Donovan McNabb and handed the reigns over to Kevin Kolb. The young quarterback will have to mature quickly if the Eagles are going to give gamblers something to get excited about. Philadelphia has odds of +300 to capture the division title.
The Redskins are again the last choice of the sports books. Washington hired Mike Shanahan to rebuild the team and the former Broncos coach has already made his mark on the team. One of the additions Washington made this off season was adding McNabb in a trade with the Eagles.
It is rare that teams trade within the division, but McNabb had a no-trade clause and wanted to go to Washington. The Redskins present value to bettors who believe in Shanahan and his system, with odds of 5/1 to win the division.
