NFL Betting Odds: Broncos Gamble On McDaniels Paying Off
In the preseason, there were significantly more distractions for Josh McDaniels in Denver than a new coach should have to handle. First his star quarterback was traded, then his star receiver was being disobedient.
The Broncos ownership was being blasted by analysts everywhere for not hiring the right person for the job. It appeared at the time that McDaniels was too young and not prepared to handle the firestorm he was thrown into.
Now, it may be McDaniels and the Broncos that are having the last laugh. Denver enters tonight's game against San Diego with a 5-0 record and a chance to put a three game lead between themselves and the rest of the AFC West.
Of course, this is not unfamiliar territory for the Broncos. Last year Denver started 4-1 and were in the same position of going into a game against the reeling Chargers. That season ended with the Broncos collapsing down the stretch and the Chargers coming on to win a division title.
Denver is hoping that their new coach has enough of a voice to ensure that type of collapse does not happen again. Although McDaniels is the head coach, it is Todd Haley that is receiving much of the praise for turning the Broncos defense into one of the best in the league.
San Diego comes into tonight's game after what has become a traditional slow start to their season. The Chargers know that if they have any hopes of repeating as ADC West champions, that they will need a win tonight at home against the Broncos.
Odds makers are not buying into the Denver hype. San Diego is favored by 3.5 points tonight. The total for the game is forty-four.
