NFL Betting Odds Preview: Favre Begins Twentieth Season Tonight

The question as to whether Brett Favre will return for his twentieth season will be answered once and for all tonight. Favre will be under center when the Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers lock up in the second exhibition game of the preseason.

Favre has not wavered as much this off season as in years past. He continually said throughout the process that if he was physically able to play, he would be in camp. This past week, three Vikings traveled to meet with Favre and all four emerged from the meeting and headed back to Minnesota.

Favre took the Vikings to the NFC championship game in his first year. If he is going to lead the team further this season, he will have to show that his ankle has fully healed from off season surgery. Tonight he will begin that quest, with all eyes on the Vikings offense.

The 49ers may be one of the teams that Minnesota will have to contend with on their way to a Super Bowl berth. The 49ers played strong down the stretch last season in coach Mike Singletary's first year. This year, receiver Michael Crabtree is expected to make a bigger impact on the 49ers offense.

Minnesota may make the switch to a more run oriented offensive attack this year. Adrian Peterson is still one of the best running backs in the league, and receiver Percy Harvin has been dealing with migraines that may slow the Vikings passing game.

Tonight, San Francisco is favored at home by 2.5 games. The total for the game is thirty-five. As is the case with most totals in the pre-season, the total is low, with odds makers expecting offensive mistakes from backups later in the game. Defensive units tend to play longer into the game than offensive starters, another reason for the low totals.
