The Pittsburgh Steelers loss last week to the New York Jets did nothing to their playoff aspirations. The Steelers can still secure the second seed and in the AFC and a playoff bye if they win their remaining two games against Carolina and Cleveland.
That two game stretch starts tonight, and to wrap up the second seed this week, Pittsburgh must defeat Carolina this evening and have Baltimore lose to Cleveland on Sunday. The Steelers are also gambling on the idea that they can win these final two games without the services of potential defensive player of the year Troy Polamalu.
The Steelers safety injured his leg on an interception returned for a touchdown against the Bengals a couple of weeks back. Polamalu did not play against the Jets last week, and Pittsburgh is hoping to rest the all-pro safety until the playoffs.
Tonight, the betting odds heavily favor the Steelers. Pittsburgh is a two touchdown favorite over the Panthers. The total for the game is 37.5, with the Panthers having one of the most inept offense in the league, and the Steelers having a top defensive unit.
The Steelers offense has been somewhat of a concern this season. They have had trouble scoring touchdowns once they reach the red zone, and it appears that Hines Ward has slowed a step. Ward has had one of his least productive seasons since he entered the league.
The Panthers are simply playing out the schedule, having lost their playoff hopes early on. It is likely that long time head coach John Fox will be relieved of his duties after the season ends. According to reports, Carolina will look for a cheaper alternative to Fox in the off season. An up and coming coach will be the likely leading candidates.
