NFL Betting Preview: Steelers Have Unusual Off Season So Far
The Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl just two seasons ago, but after winning, the team failed to make the playoffs last year. That left the organization to work towards getting back on top during this off season.
Instead, the Steelers have been dealing with circumstances not usually associated with what many consider to be the best run in the NFL. Already, Ben Roethlisberger was in the news after being accused of sexual assault, and now Santonio Holmes has joined his quarterback on the front page as well.
Holmes has been accused by a Florida woman of throwing a glass in a nightclub and cutting her above the eye. Originally, Anshonae Mills was not going to press charges, but on Friday she has decided to pursue charges against Holmes.
Holmes and Roethlisberger have both, through their attorneys, maintained their innocence. Whether or not charges are brought on, the two have given the Steelers front office plenty to think about leading into the draft.
The investigation into the claims against Roethlisberger are ongoing. Even if he is not charged, there is a chance that Commissioner Roger Goodell could come down hard on the Steelers quarterback for violating the league's conduct rules. This is the second time in a year that Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual assault.
Coach Mike Tomlin has stayed in contact with his quarterback, claiming the two talk on a daily basis. Tomlin has given no indication as to the context of those discussions. The head coach, through all the distractions, must figure out a way to have the Steelers ready to compete at the high level their fans have become accustomed to.
For many organizations, a couple of distractions are no big deal. The Steelers, however, are held to a different standard of conduct by not only their owner and front office, but also their fans. With still five months left until the season begins, Pittsburgh will be holding its breath that these are the last two incidents of what could become a very long off season.
