NFL Betting Preview Week One: Sports Books Offering Vanilla Odds

If ever there is a time during the NFL football season that gamblers have any type of advantage over the sports books, it is week one. Even with the odds in their favor, the chances are strong that bettors will walk away from Las Vegas sports books at the end of the week losing more than they have won.

The first week of the NFL season always offers hope, not only for the players, coaches, and fans, but for bettors as well. A fresh start always gives gamblers an opportunity to forget how poorly they did in the previous season, and a couple of wins on opening week can go a long way towards curing some of pain the bettors will experience later in the year.

The new season kicks off this Thursday, and vanilla odds are the theme again. Every year, the first week is filled with odds of three and four points, while sports books try to get a read on which teams will be competitive, and which will be playing for draft position later in the season. New Orleans and defending champion Green Bay will get the first opportunity to prove their worth.

The Packers are expected to be stronger this year than they were when they won the title last year. The reason for such lofty expectations is the return of almost half of their starters, all of whom were injured at some point during their championship run. Green Bay is a four point favorite at home over the Saints Thursday night.

Several rivalry games will be played right out of the gate this year. Most notably is what some consider to be the fiercest rivalry in the game today, Pittsburgh and Baltimore. The two teams again both have Super Bowl aspirations, and odds makers are giving the edge in this one to the home team. Baltimore is favored by 2.5.

Two attention hogs will meet in New York when the Jets face the Cowboys. Dallas is coming off one of their most embarrassing seasons in recent history, and New York will be trying to get over the hurdle of the AFC Championship game, where they have lost two straight seasons. The Jets are a four point favorite over Dallas.

Two other NFC East teams will kick off what is sure to be a fight to the finish in the division many consider to be the strongest in the league year after year. The Giants travel to Washington, but are one of the rare road favorites, with odds makers installing New York as a three point favorite over Washington.
