NFL Bettors Furious Over Wrong Call In Steelers, Chargers Game
On any given Sunday the sports books in Las Vegas are packed. Gamblers spend the afternoon betting on the games that they like, and the sports books spends the evening paying those bettors that were lucky enough to win.
This past Sunday, however, sports books were overcome with upset gamblers who had lost money in the Pittsburgh, San Diego football game. The referees in the game blew a call on the last play of the game that cost many of these gamblers money.
The Steelers were favored by five in the game. Pittsburgh had a one point lead and gamblers who bet on Pittsburgh were about to win their bets, or so they thought. That is when the Chargers began a crazy play that included lateraling the football several times.
The last lateral was knocked away by Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu and he then recovered the fumble and ran it in for a touchdown on the game's last play. The referees convened and decided one of the laterals was illegal and that the play was blown dead.
The touchdown did not count, and the Chargers covered the point spread. The NFL on Monday admitted that the call was incorrect and that it should have been a touchdown, which, in effect, would have meant the Steelers would have covered the point spread.
Late Monday, gamblers were still upset about the blown call. "Man, I lost $200 bucks because those referees were incompetent. I've gambled for a long time and I've never lost a bet like that. I'll remember that one for a long time," said Henry Schlager.
