The NFL cuts that are taking place this weekend are doing much more than costing young and veteran players their jobs. The cuts are also expected to influence the Super Bowl betting odds for several teams, including the Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals.
The Cardinals made perhaps the most shocking cut of the weekend on Saturday when they released former number one pick Matt Leinart. The quarterback was expected to take over for Kurt Warner as the Cardinals starter this season, but his presence on the field was not strong enough for the coaching staff.
The Leinart cut could have implications for not only Arizona, but also Seattle. Former USC coach Pete Carroll coached Leinart in college, and a reunion between the two could be something on the horizon in Seattle.
The Seahawks also made one of the more surprising cuts of the year when they released T.J. Houshmandzadeh. The former Bengals star has battled injuries since signing with Seattle, and it was clear this preseason that he was not a favorite of Carroll and the coaching staff.
Another big name wide receiver was let go by Tampa Bay. Michael Clayton signed a five year contract with Tampa last season, but did not even make it through year two of the deal. Clayton will receive $3 million in guaranteed money from his contract for this season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the first four games of the year, and now they will also be without their starting center from last season after Justin Hartwig was release4d. Hartwig lost his job in camp this year to rookie Maurkice Pouncey from Florida. Flozell Adams, signed before camp by the Steelers, made the team and is expected to start on the offensive line.
