NFL Gambling Odds Reflect Backup Play Early In Preseason
The NFL preseason is upon us and that means it is time for football gambling. The odds makers use the preseason for the same reason that NFL teams do, to determine who belongs and who doesn't.
The first full week of games were this weekend and the lack of star power in these games was reflected in the gambling odds. With most starters playing only for a couple of series', there is not much for the odds makers to put betting lines out on.
Most games in the first week went off with odds of three points or less. The home team was usually the favorite, and outside of Washington, who was a six point favorite over the Bills, the majority of games had lines right at three.
The Jacksonville Jaguars were playing the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday night. If this were a regular season game, and being judged by team projections, the Jags would have been favored by at least ten. The line on Saturday was three and a half.
The Chargers and Cowboys met in San Diego and what might have been a pick in the regular season with both teams favored to go far in the playoffs, was a three point spread the Chargers way on Saturday.
Weeks two and three are up next in the preseason and the week three games will be most indicative of what odds makers really think. That is the week when most of the teams play their starters at least for a half, and sometimes three quarters.
