NFL Gambling On Draft To Beat NBA Playoffs In Ratings

The NFL has become to major sports leagues what the New York Yankees are to Major League Baseball. The two entities both operate under the assumption that the world revolves around them, and anything else that gets in the way of their exposure will be destroyed.

On Thursday evening, the NFL goes back to its bullying ways. For the first time ever, the draft will be held in prime time, and will go head to head with the NBA playoffs for television ratings. Respecting other major sports leagues has never been high on the list for the NFL.

Tonight, the draft goes head to head with LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, two of the biggest sports stars on the planet. The NFL will be helped, however, by the fact that both LeBron and Kobe and their respective teams hold 2-0 advantages over their opponents.

Any chance to steal the spotlight and the NFL usually acts quickly. All week, the draft has created a buzz on all the top sports networks and radio stations across the country. Unfortunately for the NFL, much of the excitement of this year's draft has centered on whether or not one of their marquee players, Ben Roethlisberger, will be traded.

Much like the Yankees, the NFL does not like to be out of the spotlight for more than ten minutes. The draft, once a weekend when young players' dreams were realized, has become nothing more than another money grab for the league.

Prime time round one means prime time advertising slots on ESPN, which will carry the draft live. More advertising keeps the networks happy, which, in turn, keeps the NFL brass happy.

The draft begins at 7PM tonight, and for those NFL die-hard fans, that will mean several hours glued to the television to find out which one player their team has chosen. The rest of the sports world, however, will likely be tuned in to see the superstars of today doing their thing on the court.
