NFL Gambling Preview: Outrageous Spreads May Not Be Enough
The NFL prides itself on parody, but this is not the year for them to be boasting about that fact. There is a large gap between the top teams in the league and the bottom teams, the largest, in fact, that there has been ever.
The disparity between the top and the bottom is being seen more each week in the betting odds for NFL games. This week, there are some outrageous betting lines, and some analysts wonder if the high spreads are even enough.
The Chicago Bears are coming off a humiliating loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals marched up and down the field on Chicago, and this week the Bears face another AFC North team, the Cleveland Browns.
Judging by the results of the Bears performance last week, one would think this line may be close. Nope. Chicago is favored by fourteen points against the Browns. This is only one of the games where the lack of a competitive balance exists.
Indianapolis is playing a team in San Francisco that many believed had turned the corner this year. They started strong, but have struggled in their past couple of games. The Colts are undefeated, and favored by 13.5 points.
Dallas is a ten point favorite against Seattle at home. Arizona, who has played nice football lately, is also a double digit favorite. The Cardinals are favored by 10.5 over a struggling Carolina team.
The largest point spread of the week is in San Diego, where the Chargers are 17.5 point favorites over Oakland. While Oakland has played poorly, the Chargers have not necessarily played up to their abilities as of yet.
The early part of the season is complete, and that also means that the advantage that gamblers had over sports books is now over. The odds makers have started to adjust the lines according to team strengths and weaknesses. This week's spreads are a prime example of just how big the gap between those strengths and weaknesses are.
