NFL Monday Night Betting Preview: Eagles And Saints Reeling

The New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles were two of the most popular teams in the off season, but for very different reasons. The Saints were dealing with a bounty scandal that gutted their team both on and off the field. The Eagles, meanwhile, were again the toast of the town, having reloaded in free agency.

As the season approaches the midway mark, the two teams meet tonight in a game that neither expected to face this early in the year. The Saints and Eagles have both gotten off to tough starts, and the loser tonight will take a serious blow to any fleeting playoff hopes.

The Saints come into tonight's game with the Eagles with a 2-5 record. The team has been without head coach Sean Payton for the entire year, and they only had starting linebacker Jonathan Vilma back since last week. The two had both been implicated in the bounty scandal.

New Orleans is getting another MVP-type season from quarterback Drew Brees, but the defense has been among the worst in the league. The Saints had won two in a row before losing to Denver last weekend. Another loss would mean the Saints would have to run the table just to get to 10-6, and that still may not be good enough in the NFC to earn a playoff spot.

Philadelphia is in a little better spot than New Orleans. The Eagles are 3-4, and with the Giants loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday, the Eagles could climb to within two games of the Giants for first place in the NFC East with a win tonight.

If the Eagles are going to start winning on a consistent basis, they will need to get much better play from their offense. Michael Vick has looked like a shell of himself all year long, and recent reports out of Philly suggest Vick may not be long as the starter for the Eagles if his lackluster play continues.

The Saints are the betting favorite at home this evening, with odds makers installing a three point line. The 52 total for the game suggests that the offenses will have a big say in which team gets back on track.
