NFL Sees The Week Of The Underdog With Many Upsets
Every year the NFL has a week or two where games that are being played seem to defy conventional wisdom. this week was one of those weeks for this season.
Of the 14 games that were completed heading into Sunday night's Chicago-New York game, 10 of the 14 underdogs covered the spreads against the favorites, and of those ten, six won the games outright.
The only favorites that covered were Dallas, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and San Diego. The Chargers were only one point favorites and many still expected them to lose on the road at Cincinnati.
The underdogs that won their games outright were Houston, the Jets, Cleveland, Green Bay, Miami, and San Francisco. The fact that they pulled the upsets was surprising enough, but who they defeated was even more impressive as they ousted Jacksonville,New England, Atlanta, Minnesota, Kansas City, and Detroit respectively. Other than Detroit those are all teams with playoff asperations.
The teams who covered the spreads but failed to win the games were Tennessee, Buffalo, Oakland, and St. Louis. The Bills might have been the most impressive, even though they lost, as they held the league's most touted offense, Indianapolis, to just 17 points and lost the game only 17-16.
