NFL Sunday Night Football Betting Preview: Jets Versus Cowboys

The NFL claims that they do not follow betting lines and that gambling does not drive the popularity of their sport. That theory is continually tested, however, with the games the league schedules for prime time each season.

Tonight, the first Sunday night football game of the year will be played in New York, where the Jets will face the Dallas Cowboys. The two teams are two of the biggest draws in the league, and that not only goes for television ratings but also for wagering at Las Vegas sports books.

The Cowboys have been one of the most flamboyant franchises in NFL history. The team has developed a reputation of having to have the spotlight on them, even in recent years when their on-field performance has not been so strong. Dallas is looking to rebound from a miserable season last year, and to do so they will have to start tonight in New York.

The team that has replaced Dallas as the most outspoken and disliked team in the league is the Jets. New York has brought in head coach Rex Ryan, and the coach has done nothing short of predicting Super Bowl wins each of the past two seasons. In each case, the prediction proved to be untrue when the jets lost in the AFC Championship game.

For the Jets to reach their annual goal, they must continue to get improvement from quarterback Mark Sanchez. The defense has been steady the past couple of seasons, and will again be called on to do most of the heavy lifting for a team with Super Bowl hopes. Ryan brought in Plaxico Burress to sure up the receiving corp this past summer.

Dallas will be getting Tony Romo back for the season opener against New York. The Cowboys played most of the season without Romo last year, and having their quarterback under center again should provide a spark to an offense that struggled at times last year. Dez Bryant, who exploded on to the scene last year, is also back after missing the end of last season with an injury.

For tonight's game, the betting public has caused odds makers to make the Jets the betting favorites. New York is favored by six points over the Cowboys in the opener, and the total for the game is 41.5.
