NFL Teams Can Start Gambling On Free Agents Friday
The NFL knew that it was a long shot that a new labor agreement would be reached before the start of free agency. With that time period less than twenty-four hours away, it appears as though the league is preparing for an uncapped season next year.
The theory that has been floated by many analysts is that the teams that like to spend, such as the Redskins and Cowboys, will do so at a record pace. The two teams, however, have denied that they will simply thrown money at their problems.
What will occur on Friday is the start of free agency, and with no cap, teams are free to spend, spend, spend, if they so choose. Many NFL teams have said they will continue to operate within the structure that they have in past years.
Many free agents have been hurt by the fact that there is no new labor deal. Without it, many players who would have gained unrestricted free agent status will now only be restricted free agents. That means their teams can match offers from others.
Several big name players are unrestricted free agents. Julius Peppers is tops on that list, and he will command a similar salary to the one that Albert Haynesworth received last year from Washington. The Bears, Patriots, and Eagles have all been linked to having some interest in Peppers.
Three running backs that will be available are Brian Westbrook, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Thomas Jones. The latter was the most productive of the three last season, scoring double digit touchdowns and rushing for over 1,200 yards.
