NFL Teams May Not Gamble On Burress After Indictment Monday
The Pittsburgh Steelers are the model by which many NFL teams measure themselves. It may be situations like the one that occurred with Plaxico Burress a few years ago that makes the Steelers who they are.
Burress left the Steelers as a free agent after Pittsburgh would not give him the contract he desired. The Steelers have a history of being able to detect character in their players, and the Burress situation is a prime example.
Burress was indicted on Monday by a grand jury on weapons charges. The indictment will most likely mean that Burress will be without a job this season. He could face up to three and a half years in prison if convicted.
A conviction in the case would seem likely at this point considering that Burress testified late last week about the case. All of his testimony could be used against him in a trial, so he may have implicated himself last week.
The testimony, however, could lead to prosecutors going easy on Burress. His openess in the questioning process and willingness to cooperate could save him the jail time. That is what his attorney's had to be betting on by putting him in front of the grand jury.
Whatever comes of Burress' legal troubles, Monday did not help his cause in finding a team to play for this year. A team must be willing to take the chance that they may lose their star receiver if the law comes calling, and that may be too big of a risk for any team to take.
