The St. Louis Cardinals may not always have the best team on paper going into the regular season, but manager Tony LaRussa and pitching coach Dave Duncan have made a habit out of creating winners. This year, the Cardinals are once again the team to beat in the division.
St. Louis has the one player in the league that no team can match. Albert Pujols has stood head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the player universe now for the better part of the past decade. he has no flaws in his swing, and he is the most feared hitter in the game.
Pujols also appears to be fully healthy for the first time in years. LaRussa believes that his star first baseman still has not reached his ceiling, and that Pujols could become the first triple crown winner since Ted Williams.
Over the years, the Cardinals front office has done a good job of providing LaRussa with professional ballplayers that are good clubhouse leaders. This year, the front office came through again by locking up Matt Holliday to hit behind Pujols for many years to come.
The rest of the division has stayed somewhat stagnant. Milwaukee revamped their pitching staff, and still returns some of the top young hitters in the game. Chicago will always be entering the season with a weight on their shoulders of not having won in over 100 years. The Cubs are again expected to compete for the division title.
Pittsburgh has some good young talent, but does not have the big hitters in the middle of their lineup to compete for an entire season. Houston is aging, and not enough moves have been made to their pitching staff in the off season.
No matter how quickly these other clubs gel, the division will be St. Louis' to lose. With Pujols, Holliday, and a resurgent Chris Carpenter, the Cardinals are set to stay on top in the Central for a long time to come.
