The Philadelphia Phillies have seized control of the National League East much like the Atlanta Braves had done during the nineties. With a new season around the corner, Philadelphia is again the betting favorite to win the division.

This year, however, other teams have taken strides to catch up with the Phillies. Atlanta has made some key acquisitions, while Florida returns a stable of good pitchers. Washington may still be a year or two away from competing, and the Mets seem to be the X-factor.

The Braves picked up Troy Glaus and have a rising star on the mound in Tommy Hanson. Atlanta also has several other pitchers that can make the race for the division crown exciting all the way through September.

Florida returns perhaps the best top to bottom pitching staff in the division. The Marlins, however, will again struggle to score runs, and the bullpen does not have a clear cut closer. Still, Florida should have enough talent to stick around.

Washington has perhaps their best player, Steven Strasburg, starting in the minor leagues. That shows that the front office believes that contending may still be a year or two away. The Nationals have made improvements to their offense, but likely not enough improvements to contend.

The Mets may be the wild card team in the East. They were right there with Philadelphia for two consecutive seasons before injuries destroyed their 2009 campaign. Now, the Mets are healthier than they were for much of last season, and they still have Johan Santana at the top of their rotation.

The Mets weakness appears to be the pitchers who will back up Santana. Mike Pelfrey, Oliver Perez, and John Maine, have all had rocky springs, and if that continues when the team arrives in New York, it could be a long season for the Mets.
