North Carolina Tarheels Still #1, With Memphis Tigers Right Behind
North Carolina and college basketball are synonymous with one another. So when the Tarheels have the kind of season they are having, it is almost assured that they will be at the top of the polls.
On Saturday night, they avenged an earlier loss to Duke. The win solidified their place as the number one team in the country. They received fifty two of seventy two first place votes in the AP poll.
The Memphis Tigers must be wondering what it will take for them to regain the top spot. They have only one loss on the season, and that was a last second loss to #4 Tennessee. Had a bounce gone their way, they might be undefeated going into the last week before Selection Sunday.
The top ten this week is loaded with college basketball powerhouses. UCLA is the number three team. Aforementioned Tennessee is #4. Kansas, who spent some time at the top, is #5.
Texas, Duke, and Georgetown are also in the top ten. The bunch of tradition rich teams at the top of the standings should make for an exciting NCAA Tournament this year.
The USA Today/ESPN poll has the same top five teams. The only difference in their order was UCLA was #2, and Memphis #3. Conference tournaments will be held throughout the week, leading up to Sunday, when the NCAA field will be announced.
