Online Gambling Sites Drastically Drop US Odds To Win World Cup
The US soccer team left for South Africa with the goal of making it through the group stage. After a draw with England, that looked like a guarantee, but a draw with Slovenia placed the US in a position of possibly falling short of their goal.
Every soccer fan knows what happened next. The US scored an improbable goal in stoppage time that forever changed their fate in the 2010 World Cup. Had Landon Donovan not scored that goal, the US would be watching today's knockout round games on television.
Instead, the squad is preparing to battle Ghana. The US not only won their group with that miraculous goal, but they are now in a position where they may be the betting favorites all the way through to the semi-finals, should they last that long. If the US beats Ghana, they will face the winner of the Uruguay, South Korea match.
Online sports books have taken notice of not only the potential of the US team, but also of the draw it has received. Instead of facing the likes of France or Germany, the US needs only to navigate through Ghana and either Uruguay or South Korea. Their betting odds to win the Cup before the tournament started were 125/1. Now, their odds have dropped more than half, to 46/1.
Just because the draw is favorable, does not mean the US can rest easy. Ghana is more than capable of winning this match, and their victory over the US in the 2006 World Cup sent the Americans home. Players such as Donovan were on that team, and remember the feeling of losing to Ghana.
If Donovan and his teammates can draw from that emotional letdown and build from the joy that came with Wednesday's penalty time goal, they may make believers out of many fans. If not, they can head back to the US knowing that they have already surpassed their expectations in South Africa.
