While the US government is still attempting to keep gamblers from betting online, American Wagering and other company's in Nevada will soon open up their business to the Internet. American Wagering is launching an app for the Blackberry that will allow sports bettors to gamble from their mobile phone.
Gaming regulators in Nevada have cross-examined the application, searching for anything that may have made the app illegal. In the end, the regulators signed off on the application, and gamblers will now get to enjoy the freedom of betting from a mobile device.
"The Nevada Gaming Control Board scrutinized the project with a very thorough lab investigation, which helped us in setting the bar for our security features," said John English. "We have developed the first mobile phone betting application to be approved in Nevada."
American Wagering operates sixty sports books in Nevada, and gamblers will have to go to one of these sports books to set up their accounts. At the time of activation, the account holders will be required to provide their identification to verify that they meet age requirements to legally bet in Nevada.
Other big gaming companies located in Nevada may soon make the move to mobile gaming as well. Harrah's Entertainment has already launched online casinos in other country's, and they may find themselves following in American Wagering's footsteps.
"It is interesting that for years the US government has gone after companies who have assisted in violating the Wire Act, but now, betting over the phone may well become the norm," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz.
Lawmakers in the US have been pushing to change the Internet gambling laws, but even if they succeed, there is little chance that sports betting would be included in the legalized gambling options. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who represents Nevada, has already stated that he would not support legislation that legalized sports or casino gambling, outside of online poker.
