Opening Day Has Arrived With Optimism Among Gamblers For 2011

Baseball fans everywhere are getting ready to experience the joy that comes along with Opening Day, and gamblers are hoping the new season brings high rewards. With the 2011 season set to start on Thursday, optimism is eternal for fans and bettors alike.

The opening of the baseball season is different than in any sport. Every season, a team or two comes out of nowhere and surprises analysts and fans, leaving the possibility that even the worst of last year's teams could be winners this season.

The usual suspects are at the top of the betting odds to win the World Series. The Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Braves, Giants, Twins, and Cardinals are all considered among the favorites. After that, many of the teams have odds ranging from 20/1, all the way to 200/1.

The Indians, Royals, and Pirates are considered the longest of shots to win the championship this season, but each have reasons to believe they will be much improved over last year. The Indians have a slew of young talent, led by catcher Carlos Santana. The Royals and Pirates also are loaded with potential future stars.

The Yankees may be the most vulnerable of any of the favorites. With Cliff Lee choosing to sign with Philadelphia instead of New York, and Andy Pettitte retiring, the Yankees go into the season with their thinnest starting pitching staff in recent history. The team will be relying heavily on Phil Hughes to become a legitimate number two starter.

In the National league, the Phillies appeared to be head and shoulders above the rest of the league, but injuries have already put a damper on Philadelphia's chances. Chase Utley is starting the season on the disabled list, and after the loss of Jason Werth, that leaves the Phillies looking for offense heading into Opening Day.
