The Philadelphia Phillies have spent a lot of day in first place over the past several years. This year, however, the Phillies have been devastated by injury's and have yet to play up to the level of past seasons.
This week, Chase Utley is expected to return from injury, and first baseman Ryan Howard may not be far behind. The Phillies are hoping the health of their stars will help them beat the NL East betting odds, which currently have Atlanta favored to win the division.
The Braves have surprised everyone with their consistent play for most of the season. After starting the year slow, Atlanta has been the team to beat in the East for a couple of months. Their pitching staff is the driving force behind the teams success.
Philadelphia has again made a move at the trade deadline to help sure up their pitching staff. Roy Oswalt was traded from the Houston Astros, and that gives the Phillies a top three of Roy Halladay, Oswalt, and Cole Hamels, formidable opponents to any ball club.
It has not been the pitching as much as the hitting that has slowed the Phillies this season. Utley and Howard have been perennial MVP candidates, and neither has performed up to expectations this season. Jason Werth, a breakout star last year, has been average at best.
Raul Ibanez and Shane Victorino were integral parts to the team that won the National league pennant last year. Ibanez had a slow start and has come on of late, while Victorino just came off the disabled list this weekend. The Braves and Phillies are separated by just two and a half games in the NL East.
