The NFL has come and gone and it is now time for the National Pastime to take over the hearts of Americans. This week, pitchers and catchers report to spring training, officially marking the start of the baseball season.
Over the past several years, baseball has grown in popularity, with attendance being up nearly across the board. Television ratings have been higher, and the overall feeling surrounding the game is once again positive.
With the start of the new season comes renewed hope for fans of all teams. Baseball is the one sport where fans of every team actually believe they can win a title. In recent years, the Florida Marlins have won a World Series, and the Tampa Bay Rays have been to another. The two teams did so with minimal payrolls.
Betting on baseball will also now take center stage in Las Vegas sports books. Gamblers will be scouring the pre-season World Series odds, seeing if they can find a diamond in the rough. The odds, no matter how much optimism surrounds all fans, are still tilted in favor of the high spending teams.
The Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, and Dodgers are among the teams expected to compete for a World Series championship. The next tier of teams with slightly longer odds includes the Cubs, Tigers, Mariners, and Cardinals.
The season has arrived, and excitement is high. Which team will win six months from now nobody knows, but plenty of gamblers are getting set to put their money where their mouth is with their predictions.
