Premiere League Betting In US May Increase With New ESPN Deal
Up until now, the NFL, college football, and college basketball have been the target sports for gamblers in the US. Hockey and Major League Baseball are not as popular, and there may soon be another sport for gamblers to get excited about.
One of the top soccer leagues in the World, the English Premiere League, will now be accessible in the US on a regular basis. ESPN has secured the rights to a sub license from FOX that will allow the sports broadcasting giant to televise seventy-four matches from the Premiere League this season.
The contract is actually for three years, with ESPN airing the matches on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, ESPN3, and ESPN Mobile TV. The seventy-four games will be up from the forty-six games that ESPN broadcast last season.
Soccer gambling has never been popular in the US, but it is the driving force behind sports betting company's such as William Hill and Ladbrokes in Europe. Outside the US, soccer is universally accepted to be the most popular sport in the world. Americans have had a difficult time warming to the sport.
In recent years, however, soccer has gained popularity while other sports such as hockey and boxing have lost their appeal. Mixed Martial Arts has become big among the youth of America, and the recent run by the US team at the World Cup has once again given soccer an open door into the homes of US citizens.
The Premiere League begins this Saturday evening when Manchester City visits Tottenham. ESPN will show the game live. ESPN has been increasing their coverage on SportsCenter and had extensive coverage during the World Cup. FOX has been showing soccer matches in the Premiere League in the US since 1998.
