Rams Trading Number Two Pick Could Change Future NFL Betting Odds
The St. Louis Rams have been put in a great situation in the upcoming NFL draft. The Rams have the number two pick in the draft, a pick that almost certainly will be spent on Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III. While the Rams already have a Heisman winning quarterback, the second pick could alter the future betting odds for several teams.
If St. Louis holds on to the pick and selects Griffin, they would have two potential franchise quarterbacks, much like San Diego had when they drafted both Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers. The Chargers traded Brees and received overwhelming compensation in the trade. St. Louis is in a position to do the same.
This week, the Rams seemingly announced their choice to stick with Sam Bradford at quarterback in the future, and trade the second pick. Already, it has been reported that more than five teams have contacted the Rams regarding a trade. Three of those teams could dramatically change their odds if they pick up Griffin.
The Kansas City Chiefs finished the season as strong as any team in the league last year. If they can find a package that fits what the Rams are looking for, the Chiefs could add Griffin to an offense that will be getting Jamal Charles back at running back this year. Dwayne Bowe is one of the top receivers in the league, and the addition of Griffin could move Kansas City's preseason stock way up in the AFC West.
Miami is another possible landing spot for Griffin. The Dolphins rebounded well last year from a slow start, and have Brandon Marshall at wideout. A strong Dolphins defense and the addition of Griffin could make Miami a potential playoff team next season.
Washington is the other rumored suitor for RG3, as Griffin is affectionately known. The Redskins have a coach, Mike Shanahan, that developed John Elway, so developing a quarterback with the athletic skills of Griffin should be no problem. Washington also has a young group of receivers that would grow with Griffin.
No matter the landing spot for the Heisman winner, the betting odds will almost certainly look different the day after the NFL draft. Las Vegas sports books adjust their odds based on public perception, and much like Cam Newton did last year for Carolina, Griffin could give a boost to whatever team acquires his rights.
Currently, the Redskins are the fourth choice of odds makers to win the NFC East next year. The Chiefs are the last choice in the AFC West, and the Dolphins are the third choice in the East. St. Louis plays in a division that, according to sports books, is wide open next year, with only San Francisco listed among the Super Bowl contenders.
