Randy Johnson A Good Bet To Get Win Number 300 Tonight
Randy Johnson has been pitching in the major leagues for a long time. That is what it takes for a pitcher to even have a shot at what Johnson can accomplish tonight. He is one win short of 300 for his career, and many believe he will accomplish that feat tonight.
If ever there was a time that was right for a 300th win it would be tonight in Washington. The Nationals are the leagues worst team, and Johnson is fresh off of win number 299. If Johnson wins tonight, he will join twenty-three other pitchers in the 300 win club.
Johnson has piled up every conceivable number to be considered among the greatest pitchers of all time. He has 4,843 strikeouts, five Cy Young awards, and a World Championship to his credit. The only thing missing is membership in that exclusive wins club.
"Randy Johnson has been one of the best pitchers of perhaps two generations," said baseball historian Ben Grabel, "when he wins number 300, he will go down as one of the top ten pitchers to ever put on a uniform."
The road to 300 has not been easy of late for Johnson. He signed a few years back with the Yankees in hopes of winning a second World Series championship, but his years in New York were a bust. he then returned to Arizona, the place of his only title.
After a sub-par year in Arizona, filled with injuries, Johnson signed with San Francisco, and is now part of a rotation that features Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain. With those two at the top, there is not much publicity around Johnson's starts.
Except for tonight, when the eyes of the entire baseball world will be watching in anticipation of seeing something that may never be seen again. With pitch counts and five man rotations, 300 wins could become an impossible goal for future generations.
That brings us back to Johnson. A gamer, as the old time baseball fans and players like to say. A pitcher who has taken the ball time after time and delivered results. Now it is his time to stand in the spotlight and shine.
