Redskins Betting On Another High Profile Free Agent In Haynesworth
The Washington Redskins approach to winning for the better part of the past decade has been to sign big name free agents. They then throw those big names into a pot, and what they usually come out with is a non successful season.
This year, it appears the Redskins are sticking to that failed philosophy. On Friday they signed the biggest free agent available, Albert Haynesworth, to a seven year contract worth over $100 million.
Haynesworth was well on his way to perhaps winning the Defensive Player of the Year award last season before getting injured. The Tennessee Titans were the number one team in the AFC according to the standings and Haynesworth was a large part of that success.
The Titans did not choose to spend the money this off season on Haynesworth and that left the door open for other teams to try and persuade him to play in their city. It did not take Washington long to move in.
Free agency started officially on Friday and less than twenty four hours into that free agency Haynesworth had signed with the Redskins. He is added to last years prize acquisition, Jason Taylor.
Washington has operated under the philosophy that the more they spend, the better they will be. That philosophy has netted them zero recent Super Bowl championships, and only one playoff appearance. The talent they brought in could not be corralled by legendary coaches Steve Spurrier, Marty Schottenheimer, and Joe Gibbs.
