Referee In Gambling Scandal Released From Florida Prison
The easy part is now over for Tim Donaghy. The ex-NBA referee was released from a Florida prison on Wednesday. He was jailed for his involvement with a gambling scandal. Now that he is out of jail, Donaghy will have to face what comes next for a disgraced ex-referee.
Donaghy shocked the sports world back in 2008 when he admitted to taking money from a gambler in exchange for inside information on NBA games he was refereeing. He reportedly had taken thousands of dollars from the gambler.
The former referee pleaded guilty to conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce. Donaghy, however, did not use his time in prison to change, but rather to reflect.
He has written a book while in jail that blows the whistle on many other referees and the NBA itself. The allegations in the book have not been confirmed and the book does not yet have a publisher. Random House had been in talks to publish the book, but they pulled out last week because the allegations of Donaghy could not be corroborated.
Parts of the book have already been revealed on deadspin.com, and the NBA has become aware of some of the allegations. The league has said that they will look into the allegations that have been levied by Donaghy.
The ex-referee served thirteen months of a fifteen month sentence. He violated his probation back in August by not showing up to work, and he has been in prison since then. He was originally released to a halfway house in June.
