Rocco Mediate No Longer A Gambling Long Shot At British Open
Rocco Mediate was a guy who was known more for his name than his golf swing. Anyone gambling on the game of golf would find his name and chose him as their long shot to win tournaments.
That was before he took Tiger Woods to the brink of defeat at the U.S. Open. Now, Mediate is no longer a gambling long shot, but a formidable opponent to all pro golfers.
He showed in the first round of the British Open that he is not planning on being a one hit wonder. Anyone who thought he would fade back out of sight can forget it.
Mediate continued his strong play on Thursday in the British Open's first round. He finished the day tied for the lead after shooting a 1-under 69. Graeme McDowell and Robert Allenby also finished the day tied for the lead.
Mediate was not at a loss for words after the round. He did admit, however, that it has been an unlikely run of late. "A lot of crazy things have happened the last six weeks," he said.
Play continues on Friday and the players are hoping that the conditions are better than on Thursday. The weather had everyone shooting higher than normal, and left some to wonder how Mediate survived. "How in the hell is he (Mediate) 1-under. I would pay to learn how to do that," said Pat Perez.
