Roethlisberger Gambling With Steelers Future After Latest Incident

Ben Roethlisberger had it all when he won the Super Bowl in just his second season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. To celebrate, Roethlisberger consequently went out and wrecked his motorcycle and was spared his life.

The injuries sustained by Roethlisberger in that accident cost him valuable time away from football, and eventually led to a sub-par season for the Steelers. Still, fans stood by their quarterback. Now, however, he is dangerously close to losing the support he has come to enjoy.

On Thursday night, Roethlisberger and friends went to a nightclub in a college town in Georgia. By the end of the night, Roethlisberger had been accused of sexual assault by a twenty year old student, his second such accusation in the past year.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are known for being one of, if not the, classiest organizations in sports. The owner demands a certain type of behavior from his players, and it largely is reflective on the hard working people of the city. The fans have bought into the idea that their team represents their city.

After the rape allegations last summer, fans stayed behind Roethlisberger, but now, a different vibe is coming from the city. The attitude has suddenly shifted to the ideology that where there is smoke, there is usually fire.

Whether Big Ben is innocent or not, the fact remains that this is his third run-in with potential trouble, and for a blue collar town, that is three too many. Only time will tell if he has truly worn out his welcome in Pittsburgh.

One thing is certain, however. The Steelers and their fans value only one thing more than championships, and that is a hard-working football player that stays out of trouble off the field. Joey Porter learned that the hard way when the Steelers parted ways with their all-pro linebacker.

Plaxico Burress and Bam Morris also experienced how quickly this organization can turn its back. Hopefully for Roethlisberger, the Steelers faithful will give him another chance (if he is cleared of the latest accusations). If not, it will be another lesson to NFL players that athletes associated with the Pittsburgh Steelers are held to another standard, and the team is always bigger than the individual.
