Sixteen Arrested in Multi-million Dollar Gambling Ring
Authorities this week arrested 16 others accused of being involved in a multi-million dollar illegal sports betting ring headed by brothers Joseph and John Mastronardo. Joseph Mastronardo, a 56-year-old Abington resident and the son-in-law of the late Philadelphia Mayor Frank L. Rizzo, and John Mastronardo, a 50-year-old Blue Bell resident and a former standout Villanova University wide receiver who was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1970s, were arrested last week on bookmaking and conspiracy charges.
The 16, whom authorities claim had lesser roles in the betting ring, were arraigned this week before District Judge Walter Gadzicki and were all each released on $50,000 unsecured bail.
The two Mastronardo brothers already have agreed to plead guilty to the charges against them and forfeit the $2.57 million in illegal gambling proceeds that detectives confiscated from them, according to Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr.
