Sony Gambling on Sports Stars to Boost Sales
Going into a holiday season crucial to its sales, Sony Corp. is turning to a sixteen year old golf phenom to advance the sales of its merchandise.
Michelle Wie, a golf star not even old enough to vote, will be the central figure in Sony Inc.'s holiday promotions, which the company hopes will increase lagging sales.
Stuart Redsun, senior vice president of corporate marketing at Sony Electronics, has called for the company, which has used athletes in promotions in the past, to be more featured in the companies promotions of their high definition TVs and much of their handheld devices used to exchange text messages and recieve scores.
Redsun is a previous employee of Nike Inc., whose use of sports stars such as Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan have carried the companies marketing program for decades.
Other athletes besides Wie that plan to be featured in the adds include NASCAR driver Ryan Newman and Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning.
Sony Electronics has been struggling with sales and is counting on the year end sales to recover some of their profits.
