Sparks Fly In Season Finale Of American Idol
The winner of American Idol was revealed in front of a live audience and millions of viewers at home, but after Tuesday night's performances, there was little suspense as 17 year old Jordin Sparks was annointed the new American Idol.
This season was a bit different from past season's as there really was not that underdog to pull for in the final twelve, outside of Laquisha Jones, there were no hard luck stories among the finalist. Even Jones would only be considered feel good because she has a young daughter.
So out of the twelve finalist came Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis to compete for the ever coveted title of American Idol. It was a stark contrast in styles as Lewis was a freestyle artist, who incorporated his beat box style into the majority of his performances. Sparks, on the other hand was the unflappable 17 year old who belted out tunes from her exceptional vocal chords week after week.
In the end, the public chose the singer over the performer as Sparks emerged victorious. Although only 17, Sparks was well acquainted with the idea of competition, as her father Felipe Sparks, played professional football for the New York Giants.
The finale broadcast still had it's drama, not so much for who will have won, as most people expected Sparks to win, but for what acts the producers were set to parade out during the two hour show. Producers had been tight lipped about who would appear.
Anyone expecting a long drawn out boring show, received the opposite. Gwen Stefani performed via satelite, Greeen Day performed live, doing a cover of a John Lennon song, Smokey Robinson sang with the six male finalists, and Gladys Knight, with the girls. Joining the stars performing were former Idols' Rueben Studdard, Taylor Hicks, Carrie Underwood, and Kelly Clarkson. Tony Bennett sang live, which was a welcomed sight after a flu kept him from performing on the show where he tudored the contestants. Lastly, all of the former Idols on hand, and the final twelve from this year, performed a splendid medley from the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album.
But when all was said and done, the glory went to Sparks, and Idol once again provided a season of entertaining television and an endless imagination of hopes and dreams for aspiring singers for next year.
