Sponsors No Longer Betting On Tiger Woods; Gatorade Latest To Dip
Tiger Woods not only has caused his family and friends a lot of pain due to his recently exposed adulterous lifestyle, but apparently he has ruffled the feathers of his corporate sponsors. Gatorade became the latest sponsor to ditch Woods on Friday, saying they are prepared to go in a different direction.
Over the past decade, Woods has been the best bet in sports when it came to a spokesman. He had a squeaky clean image, and was the ultimate competitor in his sport. He was approaching the status of Michael Jordan when it came to sponsorship opportunities.
Then Woods ran his SUV into a tree on Thanksgiving night and details of numerous affairs surfaced. The clean image was gone, replaced by the shady thought of a man continuously cheating on his wife.
AT&T and Accenture were the first two sponsors to drop Woods, and now one of his biggest endorsers has let him go as well. Nike has stuck by their man through the tough times, and they claim that they will not drop their sponsorship of the world's top golfer.
Last Friday, Woods stood in front of a camera and again confessed his sins to the world. He reiterated his stance that he would be taking more time off from golf to concentrate on getting treatment for his sex addiction.
The one person that Woods claims he does not want to lose in all of this is his wife. While sponsors have made decisions on their future with Woods, his wife Elin has not. She is waiting to see if Woods comes out of treatment a changed man, and that is a luxury Woods has not been afforded by Gatorade.
