Sports Betting Odds Forever Changed Because Of George Steinbrenner
This past week, the Miami Heat signed the top three free agents this summer in LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. Those three signings changed the betting odds for the upcoming NBA season. This type of activity would not have been possible if not for George Steinbrenner.
Today, Major League Baseball and the sporting world lost Steinbrenner to a heart attack. The legendary Yankees owner did more than change the betting odds in baseball during his tenure as Yankees owner, instead, he opened up gambling options that never before existed.
Up until Steinbrenner, owners of professional major sports saw their participation as a money making endeavor. Steinbrenner always made money, but he was sure to thrown a large portion of his earnings back into the product that was hitting the field every night in the Bronx.
The extraordinary spending habits of Steinbrenner on player salaries has led to what today has become a player first, league second approach. When Steinbrenner was dishing out over a billion dollars in the new millennium, his Yankees teams were a favorite of sports bettors.
In recent years, the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, and Detroit Tigers have parlayed big spending into championships. In football, Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder have followed the Steinbrenner blueprint of success. The New York Rangers have consistently spent big trying to bring the Stanley Cup back to New York.
In the NBA, the big spending and stockpiling superstars is an approach the Boston Celtics tried out three years ago when they signed Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to play with Paul Pierce, with the end result being a title.
Now, the Miami Heat are trying their hand at spending in a way that would have made "The Boss" proud. Miami's betting odds went from 30/1 to 11/5 in less than one week. That is a change that never would have taken place thirty years ago, and for that, George Steinbrenner should be remembered by gamblers and sports books all across the US.
